WINE WEDNESDAY: Pedernales Cellars 2022 Far Side of the Moon
Pedernales Cellars created this commemorative wine to celebrate the April 2024 total eclipse.
SPOTLIGHT: DUCHMAN FAMILY WINERY
Founded 20 years ago by Drs. Lisa and Stan Duchman, Duchman Family Winery has been one of Texas’ first pioneers of Italian grape varieties. Winemaker Dave Reilly, who started as a cellar rat and took the helm as winemaker in 2008, strives to make wines that are true to their varietal character using the highest quality grapes grown only in Texas.
WINE WEDNESDAY: Bending Branch Winery 2022 Estate Picpoul Blanc, Camledge Vineyard
This recently released Hill Country Picpoul Blanc from Bending Branch Winery is polished and balanced with a clean, layered finish.
WINE WEDNESDAY: Pedernales Cellars 2023 Texas High Plains Trebbiano
The 2023 Trebbiano is the second vintage for Pedernales Cellars, a white wine made with fruit from Pepper Jack Vineyards in the Texas High Plains.
WINE WEDNESDAY: Spicewood Vineyards 2022 Sauvignon Blanc, Dell Valley Vineyards
Known for its popular estate Sauvignon Blanc, Spicewood Vineyards has not produced this wine for three vintages because of freezes, disease damage and replanting of its estate vines.

IT’S BAAACCKKK! After three years, Duchman Family Winery is offering Vermentino again in its wine lineup.

This Spicewood red blend got its name from owner Ron Yates who took a different path than many other naysayers who, about 10 years ago, said Texas couldn’t grow good Cabernet, Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties.

Known for its Rhone varieties, Pedernales Cellars makes a GSM-style blend called Mélange.

Progression is Duchman Family Winery’s flagship wine – a proprietary blend of different vintages of both Aglianico (oldest is from 2010) and Montepulicano.

WINNING AT CALIFORNIA WINE COMPETITIONS
Two prestigious wine competitions have announced their winners and the Texas Fine Wine wineries brought home some of the top awards as well as Double Golds and Golds. At the 2024 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, Spicewood Vineyards won Best of Class for its 2022 Semillon, Dell Valley Vineyards, and Duchman Family Winery won Best of Class for white blends for its Grape Growers BBQ White.

Texas Fine Wine, a group of four exceptional wineries that organized in 2014 to promote its wines and wineries collectively, is celebrating its 10th anniversary in style! Texas Fine Wine will host the second annual Retrospective and Perspective tasting on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Spicewood Vineyards.

Heading into the new year, it’s always fun to look back and reflect on the year – including the good, the bad and the ugly. Thankfully, we had a lot more good than bad and ugly. Here’s a quick snapshot of 2023 and highlights from the Texas Fine Wine wineries.

Texas Fine Wine – which includes Bending Branch Winery, Duchman Family Winery, Pedernales Cellars and Spicewood Vineyards – hosts its annual Texas Wine Month dinner on Saturday, Oct. 7 at Duchman Family Winery.

WINNING GOLD AT THE FINGER LAKES COMPETITION
Congrats to Pedernales Cellars and Spicewood Vineyards for top awards at the 2023 Finger Lakes International Wine & Spirits Competition. Pedernales Cellars won Double Gold for its 2021 Texas Tempranillo and 2020 Tempranillo Reserve and Spicewood Vineyards won Gold for its 2020 Dutton Vineyards (black label) Tempranillo.
2023 HARVEST UPDATE
2023 Harvest Update: “It’s a cruel, cruel summer.”
The song got it right this year with the sweltering summer heat doing a number on the vineyards. Thankfully a cooler-than-normal and wet spring got things off to a great start for our vineyards across the state.
