This Spicewood red blend got its name from owner Ron Yates who took a different path than many other naysayers who, about 10 years ago, said Texas couldn’t grow good Cabernet, Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties. “We disagreed, particularly after getting beautiful fruit from Friesen Vineyards,” Yates said. “Our push for Bordeaux varieties was independent thinking at the time, so that’s how we came up with the name.”
The 2020 Independence is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot and 3% Petit Sirah, a Left Bank-style wine. Just released last November, it has notes of black currant, black plum, cocoa powder and cigar box.
